What age should children start visiting the dentist?
Some parents are surprised to learn that children should ideally begin visiting the dentist around the time they turn one or when their first tooth grows in, whichever happens first. This is because we want to take a look at their gums and whatever teeth have erupted to identify any potential issues early on when they tend to be easier to treat and there are more treatment options available. Kids should also visit the dentist for routine cleanings and check-ups just as often as adults, or at least once every six months.

How can I keep my child calm at the dentist?
Kids and adults can experience dental anxiety, and it’s completely normal to feel a little uneasy in the dental chair. To help your child have the best experience possible, we recommend talking to them about what they can expect to happen at their dental visits in a positive way. Dental-themed books and toys can also help make dental appointments less mysterious and scary for kids. Our team always works at a pace that each child is comfortable with, and we would be happy to go over our processes with your child to help them feel more included in their care.

What services does my child need?
At Valley Ranch Dental Associates, we always design custom treatment plans based on each unique patient who visits our office. In general, we recommend that kids receive routine cleanings and dental exams as well as additional preventive treatments, like fluoride treatments and dental sealants, to help keep their teeth healthy and cavity-free. Once they reach their teen years, we can begin to discuss if one or more of their wisdom teeth will need to be removed. To learn more about our services, we recommend reviewing our services page.
